STORY & PHOTOS:
"The Last Song", the 2010 romantic tearjerker starring former sweethearts Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth, was filmed primarily on Tybee Island near Savannah, GA. Tybee is about half an hour outside of Savannah, accessible by car, and its beach and pier were featured prominently in the film.
Ronnie (Miley Cyrus) arrives for the summer to stay at the beach with her estranged father (Greg Kinnear) and her little brother Jonah (Bobby Coleman). She is reluctant to give the place a chance, but she eventually meets and falls in love with Will (Liam Hemsworth). Many of the romantic scenes between Ronnie and Will take place on Tybee Beach, near the area where you'd find the house that stood in for Ronnie's.
Down the beach a little bit you'll find the Tybee Pier and Pavilion. There's a fishing pier as well as a pavilion (which is available to rent), both of which were used in the film. The bonfire Ronnie attends with Blaze (Carly Chaikin) takes place underneath the pier.
In front of the pier and pavilion are the beach volleyball courts, where Ronnie watches Will play volleyball.
Remember the loggerhead sea turtles that Ronnie discovers outside her house on the beach? She goes to great lengths to protect them until they finally hatch. She, Will, and Jonah gleefully watch the baby turtles make their way to the ocean, just before Ronnie's dad collapses on the beach.
All of that turtle stuff is legit, guys. When I was in Savannah I even saw a news story about the turtles. When you cross the bridge from Savannah into Tybee, there are Turtle Crossing signs... so that's your first hint that some turtle stuff is going down.
Then, on the beach, there are little areas surrounded by tape where turtles are waiting to hatch. It was cool to see that these little turtle voyages really happen and weren't just made up for the movie. Also turtles are really cute and make me happy. The beach area and the pier/pavilion look pretty much the same as they did in "The Last Song", so you can get some good photo ops, especially on a nice day. My mom and I snapped a few:
You can also see the area where Ronnie's dad's house was. It's kind of tucked away (and it's private property) so it's hard to get a good photo, but you can get the vibe:
Tybee Island's beach is a popular summer destination and it would be worth checking out, especially if you're a fan of "The Last Song"! My mom and I had fun checking it out and taking photos. The island is accessible from Savannah via U.S. 80.
