"Home Alone" is one of my favorite movies of all time, and definitely my favorite Christmas movie. So when I was in Chicago I made it my mission to track down the house where Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) and his family lived in the 1990 classic. I grabbed the address from iMDB and headed to Winnetka, which is just outside of the city.
The McCallister house is where most of the main action in "Home Alone" takes place -- it's where Kevin fights with his family in the beginning of the film, and where he realizes he was left behind. It's where he eats a ton of ice cream, uses aftershave for the first time, and hides under the bed from his scary neighbor. And, finally, it's where he sets up his elaborate and hilarious traps and stumbling blocks for bumbling burglars Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern), the Wet Bandits.
As a kid, I remember thinking how stunning the house was -- it was a symbol of wealth and looked like it belonged in a perfect, picturesque neighborhood. It still looks that way, and I got little-kid butterflies when I saw it in person.
I posed in front of the house doing, of course, Macaulay's iconic hands-on-face scream. It seemed like the right thing to do. But then as I was posing a car drove slowly up the street like it was going to turn into the McCallister driveway, so I got really awkward and flailed across the street. I'm sure the home's owners, though, are familiar with film fans and gawkers coming to take photos.
