STORY & PHOTOS

I’ve been wanting to visit The Mystic Museum since I saw Instagram photos of their 90s slashers exhibit featuring recreated Scream sets.

I finally got to visit and experience their Horror High Reunion exhibit and it was really fun! The exhibit is set up like a selfie museum (not a haunted house) but it does have “activations” — when you scan your ID card, something happens (movement, sound, light, etc.) — that were pretty cool.

First of all, the shop itself is super cool and beautifully curated:

The exhibit is set up in the back, and you can buy tickets at the shop’s counter. My “ticket” for the exhibit was a Horror High ID card, which was completely adorable and on-brand for the exhibit. I got to customize it with my choice of ID photo (I chose Courtney Shayne, Rose McGowan’s character from Jawbreaker) and superlative (I chose Prom Scream Queen). They honestly had me at this ID card; I love commitment to a theme.

There were several different high school horror scenes set up — a hallway, a classroom, a cemetery, a bathtub, a senior prom, and Stu Macher’s garage (poor Tatum) as well as a cute Jawbreaker moment. It’s all set up so you can pose in the scenes (there are props too!) and have fun with the activations. The attention to detail was really good, and I lost track of all the movies that were referenced!

Admission was only $20 for the exhibit, which I thought was well worth it. My husband and I both had a lot of fun!

I definitely recommend visiting The Mystic Museum if you’re in Burbank. It’s in a cute area on Magnolia Blvd within walking distances of cafes and other stores, the exhibit gives you bang for your buck, and the shop is full of cool things!

The exhibits rotate — past themes include 90s slashers and Camp Horror, among others. I will definitely be back in the future!
