STORY & PHOTOS
1997’s “LA Confidential,” an old-Hollywood murder mystery starring Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, and Kim Basinger, exposes the seedy underbelly of scandal, police corruption, and tabloid journalism, and won two Academy Awards. Living up to its name, the film was shot almost entirely in Los Angeles and Hollywood, and at some legendary Hollywood landmarks.
For starters, the film opens with a voiceover by Danny DeVito’s character, who writes a Hollywood tattler called “Hush Hush”. The exterior of DeVito’s office is actually Hollywood’s famed Crossroads of the World on Sunset Boulevard near Las Palmas.
Recently, Crossroads of the World popped up in the Ben Affleck-directed "Argo"; it was where Kevin (Ben Affleck) and Lester (Alan Arkin) met with Max Klein (Richard Kind) to buy the option on the Argo screenplay for their fake movie:
It looks much the same in real life, but without as much of a retro flair:
In addition to "L.A. Confidential" and "Argo", the locale was the location of Demi Moore’s office in “Indecent Proposal", and was used as a lunch spot on an episode of "Dexter", where Dex "runs into" Boyd Fowler in the third episode of the fifth season:
Originally a shopping mall, and built in the 1930s, Crossroads of the World evokes the look of an ocean liner and is a fun, kitschy place to visit in L.A. (not to mention a great site for photos). It currently rents out office spaces.
