#79: Mary Anne Breaks the Rules
Mary Anne spends the first 40 (!) pages of this book waxing on about how perfect her life is, which - even for Mary Anne - is pretty annoying. The only real problem she has is trying to give Jake Kuhn a male role model, since he’s been a bit out of sorts since his parents split up and his dad moved to Texas. She asks her perfect boyfriend Logan to swing by after practice some day while she’s baby-sitting at the Kuhn house so he can spend some time with Jake. Logan, the perfect boyfriend, does just that and it definitely puts Jake in a better headspace.
Since it went so well, Logan keeps coming over when Mary Anne is baby-sitting at the Kuhns’. Jake is thrilled, and everything is great…. except that Mary Anne never asked or mentioned to Mrs. Kuhn anything about Logan coming over. And one day Mrs. Kuhn comes home early and finds Logan there. She is… displeased. And Mary Anne is too nervous and non-confrontational (I relate) to be like, I thought your son needed a male role model. So Mary Anne basically walks herself to the gallows and awaits her execution.
Suddenly Mary Anne’s perfect life has gone to shit. The BSC is kind of peeved because pissed-off parents are not good for business. Plus, the whole situation has made things awkward between Mary Anne and Logan, and Jake is bummed out about not having Logan around anymore. And then, of course, Mary Anne is too nervous to actually call Mrs. Kuhn to apologize and explain herself. Now all of a sudden BSC business seems slow and everyone’s jumping to take the jobs that do come in before Mary Anne can have a chance to snag any.
Turns out, though, Jake explains the situation to his mother, who realizes what Mary Anne was trying to do and that Mary Anne and Logan weren’t locking the kids outside and then feeling each other up or anything. (As if they’ll ever go past first base.) She actually apologizes to Mary Anne, and then sets up some time for Jake to spend with Logan. She also calls Kristy at the next BSC meeting to be like, “we cool.” And, of course, then business starts exploding for the BSC. Everything’s coming up Spier!
